Dissociation refers to a person disconnecting from their feelings, thoughts, memories and sense of identity. It is often considered a defence mechanism the mind uses to cope with stressful and traumatic experiences. Through dissociation, a person creates some psychological distance from the traumatic event, allowing them to detach from the distressing thoughts, feelings and emotions associated with the trauma.
