Hey guys! Here’s a short video with a great look at some basalt under a microscope. I really like thin sections (the rock under the microscope) because they kind of remind me of the kaleidoscope I had when I was younger. This is an Aphanitic porphyritic piece of basalt, meaning that there are two (or more) crystal sizes present in the rock, one of which is not visible to the naked eye. There are phenocrysts of olivine and pyroxene, but the olivine is weathering into iddingsite on the rims, which
